Welcome to Culm Valley u3a

Culm Valley u3a was launched in September 2019. Part of a national movement that was founded in 1982, Culm Valley u3a is part of a UK-wide collection of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. Members enjoy exploring new ideas, developing new skills and enjoying  activities together.

We meet in local community venues and in members' homes around the Culm Valley in Devon and wherever we meet you can be sure you will receive a warm welcome, make new friends, develop whatever interests you have and have fun. We look forward to meeting you very soon.

Our monthly Members' Meetings are held at 2pm on the first Thursday in the month (except in January). We meet at Willand Village Hall, Gables Road, Willand, EX15 2PL. Arrive anytime between 1.30 and 2.00 to socialise and link up with other members, visit the Interest Group tables and find a place to sit. New members are always welcome.

For news of upcoming meetings and other activities, click on Events for up to date news of the various Interest Groups; click on Interest Groups on the bar at the top of the page.

Speaker: CVu3a member Ken Wood

Talking about 'Doing National Service for Queen and Country'

We'll hear about two years in the life of '23363602 Craftsman Wood' from his initial call up and basic training in Dorset to his assignment to the British Army of the Rhine, and the times he had there both good and not so good.

Ken describes the experience of National Service for some as an opportunity to travel and broaden their horizons while for others it was a hardship and a complete waste of time.  Initial basic training was rough, endless drilling, gruelling inspections, physical training, rifle practice, polishing boots and equipment, and all the time corporals and sergeants continually shouting and swearing from early morning until dusk.  Come and hear about his experiences as a 19 year old in Germany both on and off duty!

What is u3a?

u3a brings together people in their ‘third age’, i.e. the age when you have finished working full-time or raising their family and have time to pursue and develop their interests and explore new hobbies.

For u3a members learning is its own reward, as we socialise and learn for pleasure, in a friendly and informal environment.
